We visit Burns Bog because the environment and ecology of the bog are important in understanding the evolution of the Fraser Delta, the landscape of the lower Fraser Valley, and the range of natural vegetation in the region...The Society has helped us by improving our understanding of Burns Bog and giving us a local contact to guide us round this part of our field course

My students expand their horizons in two ways that are directly supported by the Burns Bog Conservation Society (BBCS). First, the education coordinator at the BBCS gives my students a tour of the Delta Nature Reserve portion of the bog, exposing the students experientially to this alternative world, and inviting them to consider the bog. Second, the education coordinator of the BBCS oversees a project in which my undergraduate students go into elementary schools to teach children about the bog, its life forms, its history, and challenges it faces. These two opportunities grant my students a concrete local context in which to confront the politics of human/ non-human relations. The impact on the student is notable - it is a lifechanging, perspective-shifting experience for many of them.

Over the past few years, I’ve been able to witness the hard work done by the staff, volunteers and board members of the Burns Bog Conservation Society. Their dedication to preserving a key part of the local ecosystem results in a better quality of life for everyone in this part of BC... I am especially pleased to see the involvement of young people in this organization. Children who participate in summer camps, University students who work as summer staff and youth in the community who volunteer all show us that this work will have supporters well into the future. As younger generations learn about the work that this organization has done to secure a healthy environment for their future, they have also joined in to help.
